Mother is Nama Parayana Pritha. She loves a recitation of Namam. The Akhanda Namam at Jillellamudi is undoubtedly the spinal cord of all our religious activities there.
Several decades back, Ammaji, Vasundharakkayya’s sister was sitting at Alankara Hyma site and was participating in Akhanda Namam. Ammaji was very young at that time. Someone came and told her “Amma is calling you” Ammaji immediately stopped recitation of Namam and rushed to Amma.
Mother, at that time, was staying in the ground floor of House of All, where Seshakkayya is staying at present. As Ammaji approached, Mother sat on Her cot, and asked her “My child, what are you doing?” “Mother, I was doing the namam. Someone said you are calling me, I came rushing.” Mother immediately said “If you are doing namam, even if I call, you should not stop namam and come to me” Mother is Sarva Sakshini. We as fortunate brothers who have seen Amma experienced innumerable incidents which prove Amma’s omniscience. Why did Amma create this situation? For me, the answer is loud and clear. Through this incident, Mother told Ammaji and the world through Ammaji that namam is absolutely important. Namam is greater than Nami.
During 1981, after nannagaru left the physical body, and his physical remains, duly sanctified were consecrated in the sanctum sanctorum of Anasuyeswaralayam, there was large crowd of visitors day after day, and I could not go and sit near Amma. However, due to amma’s benevolent grace, the mind was constantly reciting namam, along with the recitation, as I close the eyes, I could see the face of Amma, small in size, absolutely glorious, wearing Her beautiful nose stud. On the last day of my visit, I went to Amma and said “Mother, this time, I could not be near you” a reference to my inability to spend time with Amma. Mother did not lose a split second in replying “This time, more than ever, you were with me, were you not reciting namam non stop?” An assurance to me and those who are willing to listen, “my dear children, my Sannidhanam comes from namam.” You are near me, wherever you are, if you are reciting namam. Physical proximity alone is not my sannidhyam” What a boon, for Mother is not with us physically, but we can be close to Her, through this very easy medium of chanting Her namam.
What benefit to creation by proximity to the Divine? Several decades back Mother answered the question. One day, Parthasarathi Iyengar, was standing along with Amma on southern side terrace of House of All. Mother was just standing, looking into the empty space before Her, looking almost at nothing. “Mother, what is happening now?” Parthasarathi Iyengar questioned Her. For once, She was pleased to disclose to the devotee child “Crooked thought currents are coming from all corners, touching me, getting purified and going back as blissful thought currents into the world”. We all live on the same earth, but we don’t live in the same world. As a ripple in the ocean affects nearby water, so does one man’s intense thoughts affect others. Purification of thought currents is a blessing to humanity. Once we achieve Amma’s proximity through namam all those around us also enjoy the bliss.
Ancient wisdom has it that Karma is destroyed only through Jnana. Once Amma told Chirala Doctor garu “Jnana is nothing but reciting his Namam.” Recite Jayaho Matha namam and the bad karma, gets washed out.
Ramabrahmam garu was sitting with Amma and was asking his doubts “Mother, can we recite Gayatri?” “Yes, of course,” said Amma, “whatever benefit is received by reciting Gayatri the same result can be had by reciting Jayaho Matha namam” Another boon to humanity at large through the medium of Ramabrahmam garu, reciting amma namam is so easy, we don’t need thread marriage, upadesham, namam can be recited everywhere and anywhere.
As we approach Amma’s centenary year, 2022/2023, a beautiful programme was unveiled by Ravi Annayya, Amma’s second son. At around 11.50 am., near Alankara Hyma, a programme is commenced to recite Amma namam at least 100 crores from 12.6.2014 till Amma’s 100th birthday. Number of visitors received Tulasi mala from Ravi Annayya and Bhaskara Rao Annayya to count the namam they recite and to commence the nama parayana diksha.
A large number of devotees also said they would like to chant namam 21 lakhs during this 9 year period. Devotees believe that reciting a mantra so many times as there are letters in the mantra will give Mantra Siddhi. As Amma’s namam has 21 letters, reciting Amma namam 21 lakhs is a golden opportunity.
Like anything else about Amma, she makes this job abundantly easy. If anyone recites namam 800 times a day, 400 in the morning and 400 in the evening, he will easily achieve the target. In other words, spare 20 minutes in the morning and 20 in the evening, the target is comfortably achieved.
We have started Amma’s centenary celebrations with amma namam. Let us come together and participate in this unique, extremely beneficial programme, and enjoy’s Amma’s infinite blessings.
